Join Arts Ottawa’s Learning Lab Series for an insightful panel discussion and Q&A, featuring esteemed experts from Ottawa who specialize in volunteerism, governance, and equitable compensation.

The arts sector has long relied on volunteers to drive its mission and sustain its operations. However, recent data indicates a significant decline in volunteerism, profoundly affecting the sector's capacity and governance. Many organizations face challenges in volunteer recruitment and retention. A 2022 Statistics Canada report revealed that 67% of non-profit organizations experienced a shortage of new volunteers, 51% faced retention issues, and 26% reported high volunteer burnout and stress.

This decline in volunteerism has led to increased workloads for paid staff, program reductions, and even cancellations, underscoring the urgent need to reassess volunteer engagement strategies within arts governance.

This session will explore:

Volunteerism's Impact on Governance: Examining how the decline in volunteer participation affects decision-making processes and leadership within arts organizations.

Innovative Compensation Models: Exploring frameworks such as honorariums and stipends that recognize and value the contributions of volunteers, ensuring equitable participation.

Following the panel, engage in an interactive workshop where you'll:

  1. Apply key learnings to your organization.
  1. Develop actionable strategies to enhance governance structures and implement fair compensation models for volunteers.
  1. Whether you're an artist, arts leader, or community organizer, this Learning Lab offers the tools and knowledge to navigate and address these pivotal shifts in volunteerism and governance.
